FALLS CREEK
Rolling alpine tundra, curvaceous rock-strewn peaks, dancing snow gums and air that fills your lungs with intoxicating delight. Australia's ancient alpine landscape comes with a feeling. It's a feeling like no other, and you can get it at Falls Creek.
ABOUT FALLS CREEK
Falls Creek is best known for being one of Australia's favourite ski resorts, but a trip to this mountain village in summer is just as rewarding. The village is located 30km from Mount Beauty on the slopes surrounding the Bogong High Plains at an elevation of 1,580m. It was originally established in 1940 as a base for State Electricity Commission (SEC) workers building the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. But things changed in in 1947 when six SEC workers covertly built the first ski hut, Skyline lodge, cementing the area's attraction as a ski destination. The first ski lift followed in 1951.
AKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY
Bright & Surrounds acknowledges that the alpine peaks and high plains of the Falls Creek area hold significant cultural importance to the Jaithmathang First Peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the land.
We pay our respect to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
SNOW SEASON
Now Australia's largest ski resort, Falls Creek is a popular place for downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and tobogganing. It has about 90 downhill runs and 14 lifts spread over 450ha of skiable terrain. About 60% of its runs are rated Intermediate, with the remainder catering to beginner and advanced skiers.
The snow season begins on the Queen's Birthday public holiday each year and generally extends to the start of October. During this time, there is a resort entry fee for visitors.
GREEN SEASON
When the snow has melted, a whole new world of adventure unfolds in the High Country. As the alpine wildflowers spring open, so do the hiking and mountain bike trails that traverse the Bogong High Plains.
Summer and Autumn are the best times of year to hike the many walking trails of the surrounding Alpine National Park, and perhaps visit an historic High Country Hut. This time of year is also mountain bike season, with MTB Shuttles operating every weekend at Falls Creek Mountain Bike Park – one of Australia's top mountain bike parks.
