Step back into another time with a celebration of Australian heritage. Ride the High Plains on a journey to the Mittagundi Bush Dance and Pioneer Festival before climbing onto Mount Bogong, Victoria’s highest mountain.
Pioneering the High Plains expedition takes you on a journey, through diverse landscapes, along a route that highlights the vertical scale, and the rich cultural heritage of the Victorian High Country.
Mid tour you will follow the spectacular Track 107 down to Mittagundi, a not for profit outdoor education centre where they host the annual Mittagundi Bush Dance and Pioneer Skills fundraising weekend. Bogong Horseback adventures invites guests to get involved in a traditional bush festivities weekend and pick up some long lost bush skills along the way.
For the final few days the tour will head up The Long Spur to the final camp on Mount Bogong, Victoria’s highest mountain. On your last day you climb to the highest place you can take a horse in Australia, and nestled in the valley far below is Spring Spur, your destination at day’s end.
This is the Mittagundi 40th Anniversary Bush Festival.
Lake Guy Junction Dam is situated 16 kilometres from Mount Beauty, along the Bogong High Plains Road, and offers a scenic back drop to the pretty Bogong Village.
The dam is utilised for the hydro-electric scheme and is surrounded by steep Alpine ash clad mountains. A very majestic spot to visit. Try your luck around the lake to catch brown and rainbow trout. If it is walking you are looking for try the 3 kilometre loop around the dam. Park in the car park just below Bogong Jacks Tavern.
The track around Lake Guy starts 150 metres north-west of the car park. Continue through the tunnel in the dam wall and follow the walking track to ‘The Junction’ at the confluence of Fainter Creek and Rocky Valley Creek which join to form the east branch of the Kiewa River. Cross over the white bridge at the southern end of the car park and return via the vehicle track or by the lower walking track.
No bushwalking experience required. Formed track with some obstacles, gentle hills and many steps. Sign posted.

Highest of High Country, featuring spectacular climbs and descents across the top of Victoria. Wild rivers, stunning views, secluded camps and diverse landscapes.
The horses are a feature of this expedition, each of them our own bred and trained mountain horse, expertly matched to the rider. Each day the camp is packed up, loaded onto the packhorses and the journey continues. Riding is between 15 to 25 kilometres per day with opportunities for loping canters across open plains.
Camps are selected for their beautiful settings, some in traditional stock camps featuring huts, but often secluded bush camps maintained by BHA. With swags rolled out dinner is prepared and enjoyed around a warming fire, with a cold beer, a local wine and a meal prepared from local fresh produce on the coals.
All expeditions include a night before and a night after at Spring Spur, where you can join the family for a meal and enjoy your comfortable en-suite room.
